it’s me, moxy

As a multi-disciplinary artist born and living in Chicago, my creative journey is a kaleidoscope of expression, with abstract painting as a central pillar. Within the eternally complex discipline of abstraction, I explore the concept of escaping the gravitational pull of everyday reality. Seeking to capture the essence of the ethereal, I invite those who experience my work to lose themselves in what appears.

Growing up, I was fortunate enough to have my parents’ support in my need to create. My father is a musician, and my mother sang in choirs, acted, and did makeup. I took art classes in school and community spaces, mainly working in watercolor and acrylic mediums. I studied dance and acting, eventually declaring a musical theatre major at university. Performance allowed me an outlet from my sheltered Southern Baptist upbringing. I discovered early that I could study and practice to become someone else, which is ultimately what the modern education system and society at large encourage. Be someone else, but be damn good at it.

Eventually, my priorities shifted from dance classes and running lines to making a living, so I left university to work in retail. Customer service is the most difficult performance I’ve ever taken on, and I certainly wasn’t as impassioned about it. After a while, I just couldn’t see myself getting back on a stage, so I went home and dug up my old art supplies. They were still there waiting for me, and I’d paint after work to decompress; to reclaim my time and energy.

Ultimately, my abstract paintings serve as a testament to the transcendent power of art, offering solace, inspiration, and revelation to all who dare to look beyond the surface. In the boundless realm of abstraction, I find freedom, and it is my greatest compulsion to share that with others.
